This country is paying its people to read. Can it stop brain rot?
Despite Singaporean students consistently ranking at the top of global academic assessments like PISA, government officials and literacy researchers noted a drop in voluntary, deep reading among adults due to screen time and short-form algorithms (e.g., TikTok).
Participants log reading sessions on the government portal CrowdTask SG. Reading for at least 15 minutes a day earns 20 virtual coins. Accumulating 1,000 coins converts to SG$1 (~$0.80 USD), requiring 50 days of logged reading.
Beyond individual rewards, the movement features a collective target of 7.5 million total reading minutes to raise up to SG$150,000 (~$118,300 USD) for charitable causes.
Supporters view the micro-rewards as a clever „nudge”—a proven strategy Singapore has previously used to promote public health, like paying citizens vouchers for hitting daily walking step counts.
