Swedish firm deploys crows to pick up cigarette butts

A pilot project in Södertälje, near Stockholm, Sweden, where a startup called Corvid Cleaning is training wild crows to pick up discarded cigarette butts.

The highly intelligent birds are recruited to deposit the butts into a bespoke machine, receiving a small amount of food as a reward for each one. This method is being trialed as a cost-cutting measure, with the company founder estimating it could save the city—which spends about $2 million annually on street cleaning—at least 75% of the costs involved in picking up cigarette butts, which make up 62% of all litter in Sweden. The health of the birds is a key consideration in the pilot.
