Waveland hurricane museum receives funding to preserve children’s letters to Santa after Katrina

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the small town of Waveland, Mississippi, was left with very little—but among the wreckage, a miraculous collection of history survived.

Recently, the Waveland Ground Zero Hurricane Museum received a vital grant to preserve one of its most poignant exhibits: a collection of handwritten letters to Santa Claus, penned by local children in the weeks following the 2005 disaster. These letters offer a raw, heart-wrenching glimpse into the resilience of childhood, as many youngsters asked not for toys, but for basic necessities like beds, clothes, and even the return of missing pets.
